Mount Rinjani offers three main climbing routes—Sembalun, Senaru, and Torean—each providing unique experiences, with Sembalun being the most popular for summit attempts.

1. Sembalun Route (Summit Route)

- 🟢 Highlights: Most direct path to the summit, vast grasslands, panoramic mountain views, famous “Regret Hill,” and Sembalun Crater Rim campsite. Ideal for climbers aiming for the 3,726m peak.

- Difficulty: Challenging due to steep, exposed terrain; requires good stamina.

- Itinerary (3D/2N recommendation):

  - Day 1: Sembalun Village (1,156 m) → Campsite at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m), 7 km with 1,483 m elevation gain, 6–7 hours.

  - Day 2: Summit push (final km on unstable ash), then descend to Segara Anak Lake (2,000 m), optional hike to Senaru Crater Rim (2,600 m), 10–11 hours.

  - Day 3: Descend via Senaru Route to village, 5.5 km, 1,860 m elevation loss, 5–6 hours.

2. Senaru Route (Traditional / Jungle Route)

- 🟢 Highlights: Lush tropical rainforest, dramatic crater rim views, waterfalls near Senaru Village, and excellent for experiencing the flora and fauna of Mount Rinjani. This route is flexible, ranging from a 1-day rim hike to a 3-day trek combining lake visits.

- Difficulty: Moderate; more gradual ascent but still physically demanding with jungle terrain.

- Best for hikers who prefer jungle scenery over summit-only treks.

3. Torean Route (Adventure / Descending Route)

- 🟢 Highlights: Scenic descent from Segara Anak Lake featuring valleys, rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, and Propok Camp. Avoids extra uphill climb to the crater rim.

- Difficulty: Moderate but technical; some steep, rocky, and slippery sections. Recommended primarily for descent or scenic explorations rather than main ascents.

- Often combined with Sembalun or Senaru for complete treks.

Recommended Strategy

- Full Rinjani Experience: Start at Sembalun for the summit, descend via Senaru or Torean to experience the crater lake, hot springs, and lush valleys.

- Summit Focus: Sembalun Route alone ensures the shortest and most direct climb.

- Short or Scenic Treks: Senaru Route is ideal for fewer days or if avoiding the challenging summit climb.

Considerations

- Guides and Permits: Accredited guides are mandatory; trekking independently is not advised due to difficult terrain and safety regulations.

- Best Time to Climb: Dry season from April to November, especially May–October, offers clear skies and safer paths. Avoid the rainy season (December–March) due to slippery trails and higher risk of landslides. Peak crowds occur in July–August and post-Ramadan; book in advance.

- Camping: Main sites include Sembalun Crater Rim, Senaru Crater Rim, or lakeside near Segara Anak with basic but comfortable setups including tents, sleeping bags, and porter-supported meals.

Mount Rinjani’s trekking routes provide a mix of volcanic landscapes, jungle, crater lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs, catering to both adventurous and scenic-focused climbers. Planning your route according to physical fitness, itinerary length, and desired highlights will ensure the most rewarding experience.
